The UN series provides historical estimates through 2023. Figures from 2024 onward—including 2026—are medium-scenario projections, not counts or predictions guaranteed to occur.

What the age-group calculator measures

Population count

The number of males and females in every selected five-year band, converted from the UN source values in thousands.

Share of the population

The selected cohort divided by the full age distribution for that country and year, making differently sized countries comparable.

Sex composition

The male and female split inside the custom range, useful for locating age-specific asymmetries that a total sex ratio hides.

How age ranges are assembled

The tool sums complete five-year bands. Choosing 5 through 19 includes ages 5–9, 10–14, and 15–19. It reports the combined population, share of the selected place, and sex split.

It does not interpolate individual ages within a five-year band. The 100+ group has no upper boundary. For exact single-year ages or formal analysis, use the full UN data portal.

Interpretation limits

Age boundaries do not perfectly represent school enrollment, work, retirement, health, or dependency. Compare the result with the full pyramid and use a boundary suited to the question. For projections, preserve the year and scenario in any citation.

Age-group calculator questions

Can I calculate a single age?

No. This tool uses the UN’s five-year age bands and sums only complete bands. Use the full UN single-age dataset when an individual year of age is required.

Does the 65+ selection include people aged 100 and older?

Yes. Select 65 as the youngest age and 100+ as the oldest group to include every available band from 65–69 through 100+.

Why is 2026 labeled as a projection?

World Population Prospects 2024 provides historical estimates through 2023. Its values from 2024 onward depend on a projection scenario.
