How to Read a Population Pyramid
Read any age-sex pyramid in five steps, from axes and cohort widths to migration signals, dependency, and projection uncertainty.
To read a population pyramid accurately, move from the chart’s construction to its broad shape and only then to possible explanations. Avoid naming a shape before checking whether the horizontal scale uses counts or percentages.
1. Check the place, year, and data status
First identify the population, reference year, and source. A national chart may include or exclude territories depending on the dataset. A chart for 2050 is a projection, not an observed count.
On this site, 2023 is the last historical estimate in the UN WPP 2024 series. The 2024–2100 values are the medium projection. The year buttons deliberately keep that distinction visible.
2. Read the axes and units
Age runs vertically. The youngest cohort sits at the bottom and the oldest at the top. Male bars extend left and female bars extend right.
Then check the horizontal unit:
- Counts reveal the number of people in each group.
- Percentages reveal each group’s share of the population.

3. Compare the base, middle, and top
Treat the chart as three broad sections.
Base: roughly ages 0–14
A base wider than the cohorts above it usually reflects relatively large recent birth cohorts. A narrowing base indicates recent cohorts are smaller than the cohorts now in early adulthood.
Middle: roughly ages 15–64
The middle records decades of births, deaths, and migration. A working-age bulge can arise as a large birth cohort ages or as migrants arrive. A local notch may point to an unusually small cohort, but the chart alone cannot establish why.
Top: ages 65 and older
A comparatively wide top indicates a large older share. At the oldest ages, the female side is often wider because women tend to live longer.
4. Look for asymmetry and cohort marks
Compare each male bar with the female bar of the same age. A difference can arise from sex ratios at birth, sex-specific mortality, or migration. Strong adult-age asymmetry is often worth checking against labour-migration history.
Next compare each bar with the groups directly above and below it. Bulges and notches move upward over time with their cohort. Switching the year on an interactive pyramid helps distinguish a persistent cohort from a one-year display artifact.
5. Test your interpretation with indicators
Use supporting measures before drawing a conclusion:

A practical reading checklist
Before describing a pyramid, answer these questions:
- Is the year observed or projected?
- Are bars counts or percentages?
- Is the base wider or narrower than the young-adult cohorts?
- How wide is the older section?
- Are male and female bars symmetrical?
- Are there specific bulges or notches?
- Do fertility, longevity, growth, and migration evidence support the interpretation?

Why are males shown on the left?
It is a long-standing chart convention. Reversing the sides would not change the data, but using the convention makes pyramids easier to compare.
