Types of Population Pyramids: Expansive, Stationary, and Constrictive
Understand the three common population-pyramid shapes, their typical signals, real limitations, and why many countries fit between categories.
Population pyramids are often grouped into three textbook types: expansive, stationary, and constrictive. These names are useful visual shorthand, but they are not a formal diagnosis and should not replace the underlying age shares or growth data.

Expansive pyramid
An expansive pyramid has a broad base and a triangular outline. Children make up a large share of the population, and each successively older cohort tends to be smaller.
This pattern is often associated with high fertility and rapid natural increase. It can create strong future growth momentum: even if fertility falls, a large number of young people will eventually enter childbearing ages.
The important questions are not only “Is the base wide?” but “Is it becoming narrower over time?” and “How quickly is survival improving?” Comparing 2000, 2026, and 2050 can reveal a transition hidden by a single snapshot.
Stationary pyramid
A stationary pyramid has more nearly vertical sides across much of the lower and middle age range. Cohorts are relatively even, and population growth is often slower.
Perfectly stationary populations are rare. Migration can sustain working-age groups even when births are below replacement, while a large cohort can produce a visible bulge. “Stationary” is therefore best used for an overall outline, not a claim that the population count will not change.
Constrictive pyramid
A constrictive pyramid has a base narrower than parts of the adult population. Recent birth cohorts are comparatively small, while middle-aged and older cohorts occupy more of the structure.
This shape is commonly associated with low fertility and ageing. Depending on migration and momentum, total population may still grow for some time, stabilize, or decline. The older-age share and old-age dependency ratio become increasingly relevant.
Why real pyramids resist neat labels
The categories compress a continuous distribution into three boxes. Two “constrictive” countries can have very different median ages, migration patterns, and rates of decline. An otherwise expansive pyramid can contain a sharp working-age bulge produced by migration.

Shape and the demographic transition
Pyramid shapes often change as societies move from high birth and death rates toward low birth and death rates. Mortality decline can initially widen surviving young cohorts. Later fertility decline narrows the base, while improved longevity widens the top.
