55,184,819 people in 2026 (projected). Below age 45 Myanmar’s pyramid is almost straight-sided, each five-year band holding about 4 million people, as fertility has fallen close to replacement.

Myanmar age distribution in 2026
Children under 15 account for 23.9% of the population, while 7.7% are aged 65 or older. The remaining 68.4% are in the conventional working-age range of 15–64. On these shares, the site classifies Myanmar’s age structure as transitional; the guide to population pyramid types explains what that shape implies.
The total age dependency ratio is 46.2: about 46 people under 15 or 65+ for every 100 people aged 15–64 (34.9 children and 11.3 older people). This is an age-balance indicator, not a literal count of economic dependants per worker.
What shapes Myanmar’s population pyramid
From a triangle to a column
In 1950 Myanmar had a classic expansive pyramid: life expectancy was about 36 years, women averaged nearly six children, and each age band was smaller than the one below it. Fertility stayed above five children per woman into the 1970s, then fell steadily, to 3.5 by 1990 and about 2.1 by 2023. The chart records this decline as a gradual change of shape rather than a sudden break. In 2026 the bands from 0–4 to 40–44 each contain roughly 4.1 to 4.4 million people, so the lower half of the pyramid looks more like a column than a triangle. The widest bands, 5–9 and 20–24, were born around 2017–21 and 2002–06, but the differences between bands are small, and there are none of the sharp bulges or notches that wars or abrupt policy changes leave behind.
A country of emigration
Myanmar has lost people through migration for decades. The UN estimates net emigration of about 1 million between 1950 and 1999 and about 2.7 million between 2000 and 2023, equal to around 5% of the 2023 population. Much of this is labour migration, above all to Thailand and also to Malaysia, and the outflow includes refugees, most visibly the Rohingya who fled to Bangladesh in 2017. The UN series nonetheless shows no marked shortage of young men: males slightly outnumber females in every band up to the early forties, much as the sex ratio at birth would predict.
The imbalance appears higher up. Life expectancy in 2026 is about 64 for men and 71 for women, and by ages 70–74 there are 75 men per 100 women, falling to 61 at 80–84. The guide to sex ratios by age explains how a gap of this size builds up.
Growth that stops before natural decrease
Births still exceed deaths by a wide margin, because the large cohorts born before 2010 are in or entering their childbearing years, an example of population momentum. Under the UN medium scenario the population peaks at about 58.6 million in 2049, while deaths are not projected to exceed births until 2054: continued emigration tips the balance into decline first. By then the Myanmar 2050 pyramid has a base narrower than its middle, and the median age has risen from about 30 to 36. Among other countries, the 2026 structure is closest to that of Indonesia.
What to notice across the years
Distinctive cohorts and turning points
No five-year band under age 80 is more than 10% larger or smaller than both of its neighbours, so Myanmar’s 2026 pyramid has a comparatively smooth profile without sharp bulges or notches.
Births outnumber deaths in 2026; the medium scenario projects deaths to exceed births from 2054. People aged 65 and older are projected to outnumber children under 15 by 2070.
Births, deaths, and migration
A pyramid changes in only three ways: births add to the base, deaths remove people at every age, and migration adds or removes people mainly in young adulthood. In 2026, Myanmar is projected to record 881,077 births (about one birth every 36 seconds) and 513,957 deaths, a natural increase of 367,120. Net migration adds −40,682 people, ranking #142 in the net migration rate ranking.
Between 2000 and 2023 the UN estimates 23,203,512 births, 11,237,186 deaths, and cumulative net migration of −2,691,639. Over that period the balance of births and deaths moved the total more than migration did. See how migration shapes a pyramid and birth rate versus fertility rate. The medium scenario assumes net migration of −1,186,170 between 2026 and 2050.
Annual values 1950–2100; dashed lines after 2023 are the UN medium projection. The trend table below lists the values by decade.

Women in Myanmar are projected to live 6.4 years longer than men, which is why the female side of the pyramid widens relative to the other at older ages (see the life expectancy gap ranking). Infant mortality has fallen from 201 to 31.6 deaths per 1,000 live births since 1950, ranking #34 of 237 in the infant mortality ranking (highest first). A mean age at childbearing of 28.7 years sets the spacing between generations, and so how far apart echo cohorts sit in the pyramid.
Median age, fertility rate, and global ranks for Myanmar
The median age of 30.4 years splits the population into two equal halves. A total fertility rate of 2.06 births per woman is close to the replacement level of roughly 2.1, and life expectancy at birth is 67.5 years.
These ranks compare all 237 countries and areas in this dataset using the same 2026 UN medium projection. Ranks use the stored source precision, so displayed rounding can make adjacent values look identical; small differences should not be overinterpreted.

Largest age groups in Myanmar
The five largest cohorts identify where the 2026 population is concentrated. They can reflect past birth patterns, survival, and migration; the chart alone does not establish which cause dominates.

Sex ratio and the balance by age
In the 2026 projection, Myanmar has 27,449,757 males and 27,735,061 females. That is 99.0 males per 100 females, ranking #96 when the dataset is ordered from the highest male-to-female ratio to the lowest.
Males account for 49.7% of the population and females for 50.3%. There are 285,304 more females than males overall. Among people aged 65 and older, the ratio is 74.6 males per 100 females.
The overall balance can conceal large differences by age; how sex ratios change with age explains the usual pattern. The ratio reflects the male/female categories in the UN source and is not a measure of gender identity. Compare all profiles in the sex-ratio ranking.
At birth, 106.6 boys are projected to be born for every 100 girls in 2026, close to the biological norm of about 105 (compare the sex ratio at birth ranking). The ratio at birth sets the balance at the base of the pyramid; how it changes with age then depends on survival and migration.
How Myanmar has changed since 1950
The population has increased from 17,737,116 in 1950 to 55,184,819 in 2026, a change of 211%. Over the same span, median age moved from 20.7 to 30.4 years.
The under-15 share changed from 36.3% to 23.9%, while the share aged 65 and older changed from 3.2% to 7.7%. These shifts show why total population growth and age-structure change need to be read separately. See the Myanmar population pyramid in 1950 for the full starting shape.
How the population could change by 2050
Under the UN medium scenario, Myanmar’s population is projected to grow by about 6%, reaching 58,623,232 in 2050. The median age changes from 30.4 to 36.3 years.
The 65+ share is projected to rise by 5.8 percentage points to 13.5%. At the same time, the under-15 share is projected at 19.1%. The Myanmar population pyramid for 2050 shows the projected shape in detail. How UN projections work explains the assumptions behind these figures.
The annual UN series reaches its highest projected population of 58,633,122 in 2049. That turning point depends on the medium scenario and may move in later revisions. Compare timing across countries in the population peak ranking.
