What this ranking measures—and what it does not

Definition

The number of male live births per 100 female live births during the year. It is separate from the overall sex ratio, which counts males and females of all ages.

Why it matters

Biologically, the ratio at birth sits close to 104–106. Persistently higher values, such as those recorded in China, Azerbaijan and Vietnam, are generally attributed to sex-selective abortion combined with a preference for sons; they produce a male surplus that moves up the pyramid as those birth cohorts age.

Read with care

In small populations a few hundred births per year make the ratio volatile, so extreme values for small territories say little. For countries with weak birth registration the UN estimates the ratio from surveys and models.
