Togo population pyramid 2026
9,930,918 people in 2026 (projected). Togo’s pyramid is a smooth, textbook triangle with no wartime scars, and men and women have almost the same life expectancy, which is rare.

Togo age distribution in 2026
Children under 15 account for 38.8% of the population, while 3.3% are aged 65 or older. The remaining 57.9% are in the conventional working-age range of 15–64. On these shares, the site classifies Togo’s age structure as youthful; the guide to expansive population pyramids explains what that shape implies.
The total age dependency ratio is 72.7: about 73 people under 15 or 65+ for every 100 people aged 15–64 (67.0 children and 5.7 older people). This is an age-balance indicator, not a literal count of economic dependants per worker.
What shapes Togo’s population pyramid
An unbroken triangle
Many pyramids carry the marks of a war, a famine or a sudden policy change. Togo’s, in the UN estimates, has none: there are no significant bulges or notches in 2026, and the 2000 pyramid as reconstructed by the UN is close to the idealised shape used in textbooks, each band a steady fraction smaller than the one beneath it. That regularity comes from fertility that stayed high and changed slowly. The total fertility rate was about 7.0 children per woman in 1970, still above five in 2010, and is about 4.0 today. The pyramid is closest in shape to those of the Republic of the Congo, Liberia and Madagascar.
Below age 45, the steepest step in 2026 is between ages 15–19 and 20–24, where the band shrinks by about 17%. People aged 20–24 were born about 2002–06, when fertility was only slightly higher than in the years that followed, so a step this large is more than the birth record alone would suggest. Emigration of young adults may contribute, but the chart cannot establish the cause, and the UN estimates net migration close to zero for 2000–2023 as a whole.
Few differences between the sexes
Togo’s sex ratio stays close to 103 men per 100 women from childhood through the forties and only falls below 100 in the fifties. Life expectancy at birth is about 63.0 years for men and 63.6 for women, a gap of well under a year, compared with several years in most countries. Older women therefore outnumber older men less than usual: at ages 70–74 there are still about 89 men per 100 women. The data show the narrow gap but do not explain it.
With about 300,000 births and 75,000 deaths a year, Togo grows by roughly 2% annually, and at about 183 people per square kilometre it is already one of the more densely settled countries in West Africa. Under the UN medium scenario the population rises from about 9.9 million in 2026 to 15.6 million by 2050 and 26 million by 2100, and it is still growing then. As fertility falls the base widens more slowly, and the guide to reading a population pyramid shows how that turns a triangle into a straighter-sided shape.
What to notice across the years
Distinctive cohorts and turning points
No five-year band under age 80 is more than 10% larger or smaller than both of its neighbours, so Togo’s 2026 pyramid has a comparatively smooth profile without sharp bulges or notches.
In the UN medium scenario births outnumber deaths in every year through 2100. Children under 15 outnumber people aged 65 and older in every pyramid year through 2100.
Births, deaths, and migration
A pyramid changes in only three ways: births add to the base, deaths remove people at every age, and migration adds or removes people mainly in young adulthood. In 2026, Togo is projected to record 299,393 births (about 820 births a day) and 75,184 deaths, a natural increase of 224,209. Net migration adds −12,642 people, ranking #163 in the net migration rate ranking.
Between 2000 and 2023 the UN estimates 5,984,854 births, 1,645,134 deaths, and cumulative net migration of +1,916. Over that period the balance of births and deaths moved the total more than migration did. See how migration shapes a pyramid and birth rate versus fertility rate. The medium scenario assumes net migration of −350,435 between 2026 and 2050.

Women in Togo are projected to live 0.6 years longer than men, which is why the female side of the pyramid widens relative to the other at older ages (see the life expectancy gap ranking). Infant mortality has fallen from 141 to 39.1 deaths per 1,000 live births since 1950, ranking #26 of 237 in the infant mortality ranking (highest first). A mean age at childbearing of 28.9 years sets the spacing between generations, and so how far apart echo cohorts sit in the pyramid.
Median age, fertility rate, and global ranks for Togo
The median age of 19.2 years splits the population into two equal halves. A total fertility rate of 4.01 births per woman is above the replacement level of roughly 2.1, and life expectancy at birth is 63.3 years.
These ranks compare all 237 countries and areas in this dataset using the same 2026 UN medium projection. Ranks use the stored source precision, so displayed rounding can make adjacent values look identical; small differences should not be overinterpreted.

Largest age groups in Togo
The five largest cohorts identify where the 2026 population is concentrated. They can reflect past birth patterns, survival, and migration; the chart alone does not establish which cause dominates.

Sex ratio and the balance by age
In the 2026 projection, Togo has 5,001,133 males and 4,929,786 females. That is 101.4 males per 100 females, ranking #59 when the dataset is ordered from the highest male-to-female ratio to the lowest.
Males account for 50.4% of the population and females for 49.6%. There are 71,347 more males than females overall. Among people aged 65 and older, the ratio is 89.3 males per 100 females.
The overall balance can conceal large differences by age; how sex ratios change with age explains the usual pattern. The ratio reflects the male/female categories in the UN source and is not a measure of gender identity. Compare all profiles in the sex-ratio ranking.
At birth, 102.8 boys are projected to be born for every 100 girls in 2026, slightly below the typical value of about 105 (compare the sex ratio at birth ranking). The ratio at birth sets the balance at the base of the pyramid; how it changes with age then depends on survival and migration.
How Togo has changed since 1950
The population has increased from 1,399,600 in 1950 to 9,930,918 in 2026, a change of 610%. Over the same span, median age moved from 18.2 to 19.2 years.
The under-15 share changed from 41.7% to 38.8%, while the share aged 65 and older changed from 4.3% to 3.3%. These shifts show why total population growth and age-structure change need to be read separately.
How the population could change by 2050
Under the UN medium scenario, Togo’s population is projected to grow by about 57%, reaching 15,584,778 in 2050. The median age changes from 19.2 to 23.3 years.
The 65+ share is projected to rise by 1.9 percentage points to 5.2%. At the same time, the under-15 share is projected at 32.8%. How UN projections work explains the assumptions behind these figures.
The population is still rising at the end of the UN medium projection in 2100, when it reaches 26,300,754. The page therefore does not assign a peak year beyond the available horizon.
