Definition
The probability of dying between birth and exact age one, expressed per 1,000 live births. Under-five mortality extends the same measure to the fifth birthday.
2026 medium projection
Infant mortality is one of the clearest indicators of health conditions. In a pyramid it shows up as the gap between the number of babies born and the number who reach the next age bands.
The UN series provides historical estimates through 2023. Figures from 2024 onward—including 2026—are medium-scenario projections, not counts or predictions guaranteed to occur.

The probability of dying between birth and exact age one, expressed per 1,000 live births. Under-five mortality extends the same measure to the fifth birthday.
Falling infant and child mortality is usually the first stage of the demographic transition: more children survive, the base of the pyramid widens, and fertility typically falls afterwards.
Where vital registration is incomplete, the UN estimates these rates from surveys and models, and the uncertainty can be large. Rankings with values within a few points of each other should not be overinterpreted.
Sierra Leone leads with 68.1, while Liberia is at rank 10 with 53.5. At the other end of the complete table, San Marino has 1.0.
Those positions describe this particular indicator, definition, and reference period. They do not imply that every country near the top has the same population pyramid or demographic path. Open the profiles to compare the underlying cohorts.
Sierra Leone ranks first in this comparison with 68.1. The table uses 2026 medium projection from UN World Population Prospects 2024.
In World Population Prospects 2024, historical estimates run through 2023 and values from 2024 onward are projections. The peak-year table labels historical and projected results separately.
