Estimate or projection?

The UN series provides historical estimates through 2023. Figures from 2024 onward—including 2026—are medium-scenario projections, not counts or predictions guaranteed to occur.

Liechtenstein age distribution in 2026

Children under 15 account for 14.2% of the population, while 22.0% are aged 65 or older. The remaining 63.8% are in the conventional working-age range of 15–64. On these shares, the site classifies Liechtenstein’s age structure as older; the guide to constrictive population pyramids explains what that shape implies.

The total age dependency ratio is 56.8: about 57 people under 15 or 65+ for every 100 people aged 15–64 (22.3 children and 34.5 older people). This is an age-balance indicator, not a literal count of economic dependants per worker.

What shapes Liechtenstein’s population pyramid

Growth from arrivals

Liechtenstein grew from about 14,000 residents in 1950 to about 40,000 today, and migration did much of the work: the UN estimates a net gain of about 9,000 people between 1950 and 1999, at a time when the country was industrialising and developing its financial sector. In 1975 the bands of young adults, especially ages 25–34, are wider than those of older generations, consistent with labour immigration. Foreign nationals still make up a large share of residents. The pyramid also leaves out a defining feature of the economy: a large part of the workforce commutes daily from Switzerland and Austria and is counted in those countries’ populations, not here.

Reading a pyramid of 40,000 people

Fertility has been below replacement since the 1970s and is about 1.5 today, and the widest bands in 2026 are 55–64, people born in the 1960s. With only about 370 births a year, small random variation is magnified: the UN series shows about 116 boys per 100 girls at ages 0–4, far above the usual ratio of about 105, but the difference amounts to a few dozen children and is unlikely to reflect sex selection. The guide to sex ratios by age gives the normal range.

Under the UN medium scenario deaths first exceed births in 2031, but continued immigration keeps the population growing slowly, to about 43,600 by 2100.

What to notice across the years

Liechtenstein population pyramid 1975 (historical estimate)
1975. The 25–29 band is the widest in the pyramid, and the 30–34 band is about a third larger than the 35–39 band above it.
Liechtenstein population pyramid 2026 (UN medium projection)
2026. The widest bands are 55–64, and boys outnumber girls by about 16% under age five, a quirk of very small numbers.
Liechtenstein population pyramid 2050 (UN medium projection)
2050. Every band from 20 to 74 holds between about 2,350 and 2,550 people, giving an almost straight-sided column.

Distinctive cohorts and turning points

No five-year band under age 80 is more than 10% larger or smaller than both of its neighbours, so Liechtenstein’s 2026 pyramid has a comparatively smooth profile without sharp bulges or notches.

Births outnumber deaths in 2026; the medium scenario projects deaths to exceed births from 2031. People aged 65 and older came to outnumber children under 15 between 2010 and 2015.

Births, deaths, and migration

A pyramid changes in only three ways: births add to the base, deaths remove people at every age, and migration adds or removes people mainly in young adulthood. In 2026, Liechtenstein is projected to record 370 births (about 1 births a day) and 329 deaths, a natural increase of 41. Net migration adds +193 people, ranking #25 in the net migration rate ranking.

Between 2000 and 2023 the UN estimates 8,695 births, 5,740 deaths, and cumulative net migration of +3,853. Over that period migration moved the total more than the balance of births and deaths did. See how migration shapes a pyramid and birth rate versus fertility rate. The medium scenario assumes net migration of +4,317 between 2026 and 2050.

Women in Liechtenstein are projected to live 3.2 years longer than men, which is why the female side of the pyramid widens relative to the other at older ages (see the life expectancy gap ranking). Infant mortality has fallen from 48 to 5.3 deaths per 1,000 live births since 1950, ranking #165 of 237 in the infant mortality ranking (highest first). A mean age at childbearing of 32.2 years sets the spacing between generations, and so how far apart echo cohorts sit in the pyramid.

Median age, fertility rate, and global ranks for Liechtenstein

The median age of 44.7 years splits the population into two equal halves. A total fertility rate of 1.54 births per woman is below the replacement level of roughly 2.1, and life expectancy at birth is 84.1 years.

These ranks compare all 237 countries and areas in this dataset using the same 2026 UN medium projection. Ranks use the stored source precision, so displayed rounding can make adjacent values look identical; small differences should not be overinterpreted.

Sex ratio and the balance by age

In the 2026 projection, Liechtenstein has 20,071 males and 20,297 females. That is 98.9 males per 100 females, ranking #98 when the dataset is ordered from the highest male-to-female ratio to the lowest.

Males account for 49.7% of the population and females for 50.3%. There are 226 more females than males overall. Among people aged 65 and older, the ratio is 87.6 males per 100 females.

The overall balance can conceal large differences by age; how sex ratios change with age explains the usual pattern. The ratio reflects the male/female categories in the UN source and is not a measure of gender identity. Compare all profiles in the sex-ratio ranking.

At birth, 116.3 boys are projected to be born for every 100 girls in 2026, above the biological norm of about 105 (see the sex ratio at birth ranking). The ratio at birth sets the balance at the base of the pyramid; how it changes with age then depends on survival and migration.

How Liechtenstein has changed since 1950

The population has increased from 13,764 in 1950 to 40,368 in 2026, a change of 193%. Over the same span, median age moved from 27.7 to 44.7 years.

The under-15 share changed from 29.2% to 14.2%, while the share aged 65 and older changed from 7.9% to 22.0%. These shifts show why total population growth and age-structure change need to be read separately.

How the population could change by 2050

Under the UN medium scenario, Liechtenstein’s population is projected to grow by about 7%, reaching 43,013 in 2050. The median age changes from 44.7 to 46.5 years.

The 65+ share is projected to rise by 7.9 percentage points to 29.9%. At the same time, the under-15 share is projected at 13.6%. How UN projections work explains the assumptions behind these figures.

The population is still rising at the end of the UN medium projection in 2100, when it reaches 43,598. The page therefore does not assign a peak year beyond the available horizon.

These profiles have the 2026 age distributions closest to Liechtenstein’s, measured by the total difference in the share of the population in each five-year band. Similar shapes can arise from very different histories, so the match is a starting point for comparison, not an explanation.
