Estimate or projection?

The UN series provides historical estimates through 2023. Figures from 2024 onward—including 2026—are medium-scenario projections, not counts or predictions guaranteed to occur.

Jordan age distribution in 2026

Children under 15 account for 29.6% of the population, while 5.0% are aged 65 or older. The remaining 65.4% are in the conventional working-age range of 15–64. On these shares, the site classifies Jordan’s age structure as transitional; the guide to population pyramid types explains what that shape implies.

The total age dependency ratio is 52.9: about 53 people under 15 or 65+ for every 100 people aged 15–64 (45.3 children and 7.6 older people). This is an age-balance indicator, not a literal count of economic dependants per worker.

What shapes Jordan’s population pyramid

Growth from births and arrivals

Jordan’s growth has been exceptionally fast. Its population was about 440,000 in 1950, 1.9 million in 1975 and 5.4 million in 2000, and passed 11 million in the early 2020s. Two forces drove this. One was very high fertility: about 8.2 children per woman around 1970, combined with rapidly falling infant mortality, pushed the median age down to 13.7 in 1975, meaning half of all residents were younger than 14. The other was migration. The UN estimates net immigration of about 1.2 million between 1950 and 1999 and about 2.0 million between 2000 and 2023, periods that include the arrival of large numbers of Palestinian refugees after 1967 (following an earlier wave in 1948), Iraqis after 2003 and Syrians after 2011, alongside migrant workers from Egypt and elsewhere.

A male surplus in working ages

The migrant workforce shows up clearly on the male side. Children are close to the normal balance of about 104 boys per 100 girls, but from age 30 to 59 there are about 111–116 men per 100 women, and the overall ratio is 106. This pattern was already visible in 2000, when men outnumbered women by more than a fifth at ages 30–44. It is far milder than in Gulf states such as Qatar, where foreign workers form most of the population, but it places Jordan above the world average in the sex ratio by country ranking. Only from about age 70 do women begin to outnumber men.

A base that is starting to shrink

Fertility fell quickly in the 1980s and 1990s, to about 3.9 by 2000, then stayed near that level for roughly a decade before declining again to about 2.5 in 2026. The 2026 pyramid records that pause: the 15–19 band, born around 2007–11, is the largest and stands about 8% above its neighbours, and each younger band is a little smaller. Part of this bulge may also reflect children who arrived as refugees, but the chart alone cannot separate the two effects. Jordan’s 2026 structure is closest to those of Bolivia, Egypt and Djibouti.

Under the UN medium scenario fertility falls just below two by 2050, and the population reaches about 16.4 million that year and 21.3 million by 2100. With far fewer deaths than births, growth continues long after the base stops widening, a clear case of population momentum.

What to notice across the years

Jordan population pyramid 1975 (historical estimate)
1975. A steep triangle: the 0–4 band is about a fifth larger than 5–9 and nearly twice the size of the 15–19 band.
Jordan population pyramid 2000 (historical estimate)
2000. Men outnumber women by more than a fifth at ages 30–44, while children and older people are close to balanced.
Jordan population pyramid 2026 (UN medium projection)
2026. The widest band is 15–19 (born about 2007–11); the 0–4 band is about 6% smaller, so the base has begun to narrow.

Distinctive cohorts and turning points

No five-year band under age 80 is more than 10% larger or smaller than both of its neighbours, so Jordan’s 2026 pyramid has a comparatively smooth profile without sharp bulges or notches.

In the UN medium scenario births outnumber deaths in every year through 2100. People aged 65 and older are projected to outnumber children under 15 by 2075.

Births, deaths, and migration

A pyramid changes in only three ways: births add to the base, deaths remove people at every age, and migration adds or removes people mainly in young adulthood. In 2026, Jordan is projected to record 222,912 births (about 610 births a day) and 37,665 deaths, a natural increase of 185,247. Net migration adds +60,699 people, ranking #21 in the net migration rate ranking.

Between 2000 and 2023 the UN estimates 4,876,472 births, 678,243 deaths, and cumulative net migration of +2,000,929. Over that period the balance of births and deaths moved the total more than migration did. See how migration shapes a pyramid and birth rate versus fertility rate. The medium scenario assumes net migration of +377,018 between 2026 and 2050.

Women in Jordan are projected to live 4.4 years longer than men, which is why the female side of the pyramid widens relative to the other at older ages (see the life expectancy gap ranking). Infant mortality has fallen from 183 to 10.8 deaths per 1,000 live births since 1950, ranking #104 of 237 in the infant mortality ranking (highest first). A mean age at childbearing of 29.9 years sets the spacing between generations, and so how far apart echo cohorts sit in the pyramid.

Median age, fertility rate, and global ranks for Jordan

The median age of 24.9 years splits the population into two equal halves. A total fertility rate of 2.54 births per woman is above the replacement level of roughly 2.1, and life expectancy at birth is 78.3 years.

These ranks compare all 237 countries and areas in this dataset using the same 2026 UN medium projection. Ranks use the stored source precision, so displayed rounding can make adjacent values look identical; small differences should not be overinterpreted.

Sex ratio and the balance by age

In the 2026 projection, Jordan has 5,964,750 males and 5,624,783 females. That is 106.0 males per 100 females, ranking #21 when the dataset is ordered from the highest male-to-female ratio to the lowest.

Males account for 51.5% of the population and females for 48.5%. There are 339,967 more males than females overall. Among people aged 65 and older, the ratio is 93.9 males per 100 females.

The overall balance can conceal large differences by age; how sex ratios change with age explains the usual pattern. The ratio reflects the male/female categories in the UN source and is not a measure of gender identity. Compare all profiles in the sex-ratio ranking.

At birth, 104.9 boys are projected to be born for every 100 girls in 2026, close to the biological norm of about 105 (compare the sex ratio at birth ranking). The ratio at birth sets the balance at the base of the pyramid; how it changes with age then depends on survival and migration.

How Jordan has changed since 1950

The population has increased from 438,802 in 1950 to 11,589,532 in 2026, a change of 2541%. Over the same span, median age moved from 17.1 to 24.9 years.

The under-15 share changed from 43.4% to 29.6%, while the share aged 65 and older changed from 5.0% to 5.0%. These shifts show why total population growth and age-structure change need to be read separately.

How the population could change by 2050

Under the UN medium scenario, Jordan’s population is projected to grow by about 41%, reaching 16,367,354 in 2050. The median age changes from 24.9 to 32.3 years.

The 65+ share is projected to rise by 7.1 percentage points to 12.1%. At the same time, the under-15 share is projected at 22.8%. How UN projections work explains the assumptions behind these figures.

The population is still rising at the end of the UN medium projection in 2100, when it reaches 21,322,926. The page therefore does not assign a peak year beyond the available horizon.

These profiles have the 2026 age distributions closest to Jordan’s, measured by the total difference in the share of the population in each five-year band. Similar shapes can arise from very different histories, so the match is a starting point for comparison, not an explanation.
