Estimate or projection?

The UN series provides historical estimates through 2023. Figures from 2024 onward—including 2026—are medium-scenario projections, not counts or predictions guaranteed to occur.

Trinidad and Tobago age distribution in 2026

Children under 15 account for 17.2% of the population, while 13.5% are aged 65 or older. The remaining 69.3% are in the conventional working-age range of 15–64. On these shares, the site classifies Trinidad and Tobago’s age structure as older; the guide to constrictive population pyramids explains what that shape implies.

The total age dependency ratio is 44.3: about 44 people under 15 or 65+ for every 100 people aged 15–64 (24.8 children and 19.5 older people). This is an age-balance indicator, not a literal count of economic dependants per worker.

What shapes Trinidad and Tobago’s population pyramid

Boom and decline in births

Fertility in Trinidad and Tobago began to fall early. The total fertility rate dropped from about 5.4 children per woman in 1960 to 3.7 in 1970, and the cohorts born in 1967–71, already a narrow 5–9 band in the 1975 pyramid, are still visible in 2026 as a notch at 55–59, about 8% smaller than its neighbours. Just above it, the 60–64 band, born 1962–66 before the decline took hold, forms a bulge.

The largest band of all is 40–44, born about 1982–86, roughly 12% bigger than its neighbours. Those years came at the end of the oil boom that followed the price rises of the 1970s. Fertility was still around 3 at the time, and the parents were the large cohorts born in the late 1950s and early 1960s. After the boom ended, fertility fell further, to 2.4 in 1990 and 1.7 in 2000, and every band below 35 is now narrower than each of the bands at 35–49.

Emigration and its legacy

The UN estimates net emigration of about 350,000 people between 1950 and 1999, more than half the 1950 population, most of it to the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. Emigration has since slowed sharply, to a net loss of about 14,000 between 2000 and 2023. Because emigrants are mostly young adults, the earlier outflow thinned the generations that would otherwise have raised children in the islands, which probably reinforced the fall in births.

Women outnumber men from about 55 upward, increasingly so with age, reflecting a life-expectancy gap of more than six years.

At the peak

Trinidad and Tobago’s age structure is closest to those of Saint Kitts and Nevis, Armenia and Cyprus. Under the UN medium scenario the population peaks at about 1.51 million in 2028, and deaths exceed births from 2029. By 2050 the median age is near 46 and the widest bands are at 60–69; by 2100 the population falls below 900,000, with about a third aged 65 or over. The guide to population ageing describes the stage the country is now entering.

Distinctive cohorts and turning points

Comparing each five-year band with its neighbours picks out the cohorts that break a smooth slope. These irregularities usually record past surges or deficits in births, or migration concentrated at particular ages; the pattern alone does not identify which. The guide to baby booms and echo cohorts explains how to date and interpret them.

Births outnumber deaths in 2026; the medium scenario projects deaths to exceed births from 2029. People aged 65 and older are projected to outnumber children under 15 by 2035.

Births, deaths, and migration

A pyramid changes in only three ways: births add to the base, deaths remove people at every age, and migration adds or removes people mainly in young adulthood. In 2026, Trinidad and Tobago is projected to record 15,251 births (about 42 births a day) and 13,879 deaths, a natural increase of 1,372. Net migration adds +160 people, ranking #94 in the net migration rate ranking.

Between 2000 and 2023 the UN estimates 448,346 births, 245,413 deaths, and cumulative net migration of −14,247. Over that period the balance of births and deaths moved the total more than migration did. See how migration shapes a pyramid and birth rate versus fertility rate. The medium scenario assumes net migration of −15,005 between 2026 and 2050.

Women in Trinidad and Tobago are projected to live 6.3 years longer than men, which is why the female side of the pyramid widens relative to the other at older ages (see the life expectancy gap ranking). Infant mortality has fallen from 79 to 13.1 deaths per 1,000 live births since 1950, ranking #88 of 237 in the infant mortality ranking (highest first). A mean age at childbearing of 27.8 years sets the spacing between generations, and so how far apart echo cohorts sit in the pyramid.

Median age, fertility rate, and global ranks for Trinidad and Tobago

The median age of 38.2 years splits the population into two equal halves. A total fertility rate of 1.52 births per woman is below the replacement level of roughly 2.1, and life expectancy at birth is 73.9 years.

These ranks compare all 237 countries and areas in this dataset using the same 2026 UN medium projection. Ranks use the stored source precision, so displayed rounding can make adjacent values look identical; small differences should not be overinterpreted.

Sex ratio and the balance by age

In the 2026 projection, Trinidad and Tobago has 747,063 males and 766,205 females. That is 97.5 males per 100 females, ranking #141 when the dataset is ordered from the highest male-to-female ratio to the lowest.

Males account for 49.4% of the population and females for 50.6%. There are 19,142 more females than males overall. Among people aged 65 and older, the ratio is 76.2 males per 100 females.

The overall balance can conceal large differences by age; how sex ratios change with age explains the usual pattern. The ratio reflects the male/female categories in the UN source and is not a measure of gender identity. Compare all profiles in the sex-ratio ranking.

At birth, 104.1 boys are projected to be born for every 100 girls in 2026, close to the biological norm of about 105 (compare the sex ratio at birth ranking). The ratio at birth sets the balance at the base of the pyramid; how it changes with age then depends on survival and migration.

How Trinidad and Tobago has changed since 1950

The population has increased from 648,774 in 1950 to 1,513,268 in 2026, a change of 133%. Over the same span, median age moved from 19.8 to 38.2 years.

The under-15 share changed from 40.0% to 17.2%, while the share aged 65 and older changed from 3.9% to 13.5%. These shifts show why total population growth and age-structure change need to be read separately.

How the population could change by 2050

Under the UN medium scenario, Trinidad and Tobago’s population is projected to decline by about 7%, reaching 1,399,800 in 2050. The median age changes from 38.2 to 45.7 years.

The 65+ share is projected to rise by 10.3 percentage points to 23.8%. At the same time, the under-15 share is projected at 13.6%. How UN projections work explains the assumptions behind these figures.

The annual UN series reaches its highest projected population of 1,514,375 in 2028. That turning point depends on the medium scenario and may move in later revisions. Compare timing across countries in the population peak ranking.
