What this ranking measures—and what it does not

Definition

Absolute change subtracts the 2026 projected population from the 2050 medium-scenario population. It gives people added, not a percentage rate.

Why it matters

Absolute growth is especially relevant to the scale of infrastructure, food, housing, education, and health-system expansion. Large countries can lead even with a lower percentage growth rate.

Read with care

The calculation compares two points in one scenario. It does not show when growth occurs, uncertainty bounds, or whether growth continues after 2050.
