Interpretation

What this ranking measures—and what it does not

Definition

The child share is the combined population aged 0–4, 5–9, and 10–14 divided by the total population. It describes composition, not the number of children.

Why it matters

A high child share is visible as a broad pyramid base. It shapes immediate needs for nutrition, vaccination, schools, caregivers, and later the transition into employment.

Read with care

Percentage and count answer different questions. A very large country with a lower child share may contain more children than a small country ranked near the top.

What stands out in the 2026 data

Central African Republic leads with 48.2%, while Uganda is tenth at 42.7%. Among the top 20 entries, Africa appears most often, with 18 countries or areas.

Those positions describe this particular indicator and year. They do not imply that every country near the top has the same population pyramid or demographic path. Open the profiles below to compare the underlying cohorts.

Questions about this ranking

Which country ranks first for under age 15?

Central African Republic ranks first in this comparison with 48.2%. The ranking uses the UN WPP 2024 medium scenario for 2026.

Is 2026 observed population data?

No. In World Population Prospects 2024, historical estimates run through 2023 and values from 2024 onward are projections.

Why might another source show a different rank?

Sources can use different reference dates, revisions, country definitions, estimation methods, or projection scenarios. Close ranks can also change after revisions.
