Death Rate by Country in 2026

2026 medium projection

The crude death rate counts deaths relative to the whole population. Because older people are more likely to die, the highest rates are usually found in the oldest populations, not the least healthy ones.

What this ranking measures—and what it does not

Definition

Deaths during the year per 1,000 people in the mid-year population. It is not age-standardised, so it reflects both mortality risk and how many people are at older ages.

Why it matters

Together with the birth rate it gives natural change, the part of growth or decline that comes from births and deaths rather than migration.

Read with care

Do not use the crude death rate to compare health. Countries with young populations can have low crude death rates despite much lower life expectancy; compare life expectancy for that.

What stands out in this comparison

Vatican City leads with 24.7, while Lithuania is at rank 10 with 14.2. At the other end of the complete table, United Arab Emirates has 1.0.

Those positions describe this particular indicator, definition, and reference period. They do not imply that every country near the top has the same population pyramid or demographic path. Open the profiles to compare the underlying cohorts.

Questions about this ranking

Which country or area ranks first for deaths per 1,000?

Vatican City ranks first in this comparison with 24.7. The table uses 2026 medium projection from UN World Population Prospects 2024.

Which values are estimates and which are projections?

In World Population Prospects 2024, historical estimates run through 2023 and values from 2024 onward are projections. The peak-year table labels historical and projected results separately.

Why might another source show a different rank?

Sources can use different reference dates, revisions, country definitions, estimation methods, or projection scenarios. Close ranks can also change after revisions.
